New Dojo Theme

Now that I have some vacation I all over sudden found myself making a few quick buttons for the new Gallery widgets of Shane and
now I started to make a new Theme for Dojo (called nihilo - is that correct latin or does the ex have to be there? ;) ).
One thing I am missing still is a theme which can beat the great designs of EXT for example - even though I personally find EXT to look too much
like windows - which hopefully will be dead after AJAX develops far enough to replace a consumer OS like Windows :) and we all can use our standard programs in a browser... anyways enough of the talking, I uploaded a total alpha creation of the new theme and was just wondering if anyone has feedback and if such a theme is actually needed..
Take a look at http://www.nikolaionken.com/dojo/images/dojo-nihilo.png
Its all a draft and no detail work has been done.. just an idea for a theme to make cooperate apps (I personally don't like the tabs yet).
I signed a cla sometime before so if there is need I can put some time into making an entire theme..
When converting into widgets I probably would need some help though,.

btw. its not too different

btw. its not too different from the tundra theme - so maybe there's no need at all :)

I like it!

I like how clean it is. You're right that it's not very different than Tundra, but lots of the tundra stuff needs some cleanup too. Perhaps you could combine forces there? I know we need good tundra-ish designs for a lot of the widgets (like the Grid and dojox.image stuff) which are new to 1.0.

Looks good. There is no such

Looks good. There is no such thing as too many good themes — please submit it.

who's in charge of tundra?

who's in charge of tundra? Maybe it is a good idea to combine a few things - or make a entire different theme
I don't know how much the theme design affects the widget development or whether it is the other way around but
to make the tabs work for eaxmple, the Tab widget needs some adjustment (thats for later anyways I guess)

i'm not in charge, but am

i'm not in charge, but am tasked with a lot of the things to make it more eye-pleasing. I can be of assistance in making a new theme, or work with you to merge stuff into tundra. all ideas are welcome. After seeing your icons for dojox.image stuff, I my first comment was "it's very tundra, i wished the tundra icons were rounded over like that" ...

Regards.

Not for nothing but...

...I would vote for "new theme" and not for "merge with tundra"; we can always use new themes, even if it's similar to something existing.

Agreed...

And if a new themes spurs modernization of an old theme... all the more better, now we have 2 better themes :)
I like it as well, this is nice, simple and very clean looking :)

I suggest that I will do

I suggest that I will do some more detailed work and add widgets dojo currently has.
I also suggest to create some sort of Photoshop specification (I believe there actually are photoshop files for tundra) but also with information such as
corner radius, std. border color etc. so new widgets can be translated into a new theme (at least an intermediate one) by widget developers who have some sort of photoshop knowledge.

@ Dante:
Great, it would be good to have some discussion about a few things especially the rounded stuff - as I wrote earlier, some widgets such as tabs don't really support rounded corners and it would be a quite minimal addition to the widget code to make it work I think.
I'd also like to try to make the widgets really look like they do in a photoshop file (exact to the pixel) - it is tricky, but it will be most eye pleasing.

Define rounded corners for

Define rounded corners for tabs... You can make the new TabContainer look like the 0.4.x one (with rounded tabs...) w/o modifying anything other than CSS...

-Karl

try reducing the table width

Rounded corners are a good option..n slightly reducing the table width as well will deck up the whole layout..:) You can use the latest Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 to give a complete makeover..

Great, than everything

Great, than everything should be fine..
I'll try to get some more serious progress on the theme and will upload updates as soon as they are available..

just updated the

just updated the theme:

Any feedback is aprechiated!! Should I keep posting updates here (is it of interest?) or should I just set up something on my own site?

Looks great!

And I would love to keep seeing updates here, but obviously we can't tie you down and make you keep updating 2 places if you don't want to ;)

another one with some more

another one with some more form elements.. not quite sure about text inputs yet...

I am getting quite far with

I am getting quite far with the basic widgets I believe (a few like editor are still missing) so hopefullt I can start converting them into css soon - here's another update with the calendar:

http://www.nikolaionken.com/dojo/images/dojo-nihilo_03.png

I have one usability question about the time picker. All respect to the idea of such a time picker but I find it to prove quite slow in daily usage.
I use the time picker in a calendar application where we add, edit and delete events all the time and in the end the time gets put into the field manually most of the time (Scrolling takes to long, skipping is not possible, the people using it are using the keyboard alot! with using tab etc. in this case the picker does not jump to an entry once you enter say 13:).
I personally would suggest to make a Google-calendar style time picker, basically a simple combobox which only accepts time values and has several predefined values..
Anyways, only my two cents - since I was about to make the design for the time picker..

Looking great! One thing I

Looking great! One thing I noticed... you have checked/unchecked/disabled checkbox... what about indeterminate? ;)

-Karl

hehe :) I had to catch it

hehe :) I had to catch it somewhere in between here and another state of mind... check the file again... is that a workable indeterminate state?
Maybe not different enough...

Hard to tell between that

Hard to tell between that and an unchecked one... I would take the disabled checkbox and have the text still black... (something along those lines is the typical depiction of indeterminate)

-Karl

adjusted the active ones -

adjusted the active ones - made the border a little darker and changed the text. Does it get a little clearer?
When will be the 1.0 release? Don't think this theme will be ready then, but it would be nice :)

I would go with same border

I would go with same border as active and unchecked, but fill in the check box with a light gray leaving a 1-2px border between it and the outside border of the checkbox

-Karl

Updated again trying to

Updated again trying to implement what you wrote :) it's tricky though.. take a look.
Do you have an example of an indeterminate one?

Apparently I'm stuck in an

Apparently I'm stuck in an old mindset from my VB days... I thought HTML supported tri-states but it doesnt... Mozilla has this reference though: http://www.mozilla.org/xpfe/xptoolkit/checkboxes.html

I guess its a moot point and we just wasted a lot of time, because even the Dijit CheckBox doesnt support it (I coulda swore it did)

-Karl

hehe - was wondering since

hehe - was wondering since most browsers don't support it :)

the time picker is in dire

the time picker is in dire need of immediate attention (in the template/code/and style) ... they are working on and probably going to change it very soon. do you participate on trac any? you're input would more than likely be very welcomed there. search "timepicker" ...

or feel free to jump into the dijit meetings #dojo-meeting irc.freenode.net 10amEST mondays. or dojo core meetings wed 6pm EST ...

Great, will join the chat

Great, will join the chat when I am back in Amsterdam after the 25th!!
Also will check track in the meantime

Where is the stylesheet for the new theme?

Has this rounded corner theme been released? Where can we get the stylesheet?

Brett

1.1

Hey Brett,

I'm working on the theme at them moment.. there are still some quirks to solve but I hope it latest will be ready for the 1.1 release
